Pudukkottai mp Abdullah stated that Tamil-speaking Muslims generally dislike being called “Bhai” and prefer being addressed with native Tamil terms like anne, thambi, mapillai, or machan. He added that just as the word “ji” may feel uncomfortable to Tamil Hindus, “bhai” feels similarly out of place for Tamil Muslims. A.R. Rahman had said that he does not like being called “Bhai.”
