Rekha stole gold jewelry from a woman who was passing through Ranganathan Street after buying new clothes at a textile shop in Thyagaraya Nagar, Chennai, and from a woman who was returning after buying gold earrings and silver bangles at a jewelry shop on Osman Road, The Nagar. Rekha said she stole to protect her three daughters and her disabled sister.
