Hindu organisations and temple priests have strongly opposed lighting the Deepam on any day other than Karthigai Deepam. Their objection comes after the Madurai Bench of the High Court, through Justice Swaminathan, ordered the lighting of the lamp at the Thiruparankundram hilltop pillar. Priests assert that performing the ritual on a non-auspicious day violates tradition.
