At the 71-foot-high Vaigai Dam near Andipatti in Theni district, the water level has been dropping rapidly over the past few months due to a lack of inflow; severe drought conditions have now caused the level to fall to 20 feet. Residents have complained of a foul odor in the reservoir area, caused by dead fish floating on the surface as the water level recedes.
